...Vacations are funny, aren't they? If they last long enough, they can start to get kinda boring.

[The commentary filtered through the pages of the journal system around midday, as if it was just a part of a conversation between two individuals instead of a public address. Cliff's tone was as relaxed and casual as always, for those who knew him. There was a faint hum in the otherwise quiet background.]

I mean, the downtime is nice, but I'm kinda tired of it-- which should answer any questions about 'why' and what not, so don't bother askin'.

The name's Cliff Fittir, if any of you here don't know, and I figured I'd offer my services. If any of you want a sparring partner, trainer, teacher or whatever, I'm available. Just say something if you're interested.

And if you're not...then could ya tell me what this cool thing is?

[He flipped the video on at this point, revealing a small circular device methodically rolling across the carpet.]

I've got an idea already, which brings me to Question Two: Is there a way to get good tech supplies without needing to go outside?

[He ends the feed at that, but will be prompt with replies.]

[Cliff set off about town, looking for the aforementioned tech supplies so he could properly play with his new toy, though he would be keeping his eyes and ears alert for any of his friends and students to check up on. After a several week absence followed by a Shift that had made him appear as a young woman, there hadn't been much chance to see his people without having to answer more questions than he wanted. Furthermore, there were people that he met during that Shift that he wanted to clear things up with, one way or another.

However, he had plans for that evening...]

Yo. You better have some free time tonight.

[He had questions...but, more importantly, he had plans for both of them.]

...huh. Maybe. The Vac did just show up outta nowhere for no reason, after all. But it's just random. The ring? Not so much.

Yeah, I don't get it either... but it's the only idea I've got. [He glances around, looking to see if there was anything he could test it on.

Hmm... He couldn't just destroy something people needed...]

It ain't a bad one. Makes me wonder if it's got anything to do with Christmas...

[The conversation he had with Ion about his dog earlier made it the only plausible option in his book.]

Maybe.... you know, I think they were keeping a tally of how many people we kissed during that last experiment, too. [Just a guess, but either one of those could be why in Fayt's opinion.]

Should we test it?

[The tally would explain the little dashes, for sure. They were too coincidental.]

Hey, why not? It'd be cool to see if we can get something to work around here for once.

[But what would they test it on, he wondered.]

See anything we can try it on? [He glances around, looking for something, anything...

Hmm... a rock wouldn't be missed, right? He puts on the ring, nodding towards a decently sized rock on the side of the path.]

Wanna try it on that?

[He nodded in reply.]

Looks as good as anything else around here...

Alright, I'll give it a try. [He points the ring at the rock, focusing it for a second, before--

The rock vaporizes, just as it should, leaving an empty space where it had been.] ....Hey, it works!

[Cliff let out a short, delighted laugh.]

Hah-- it does! What do ya know?!

[That laugh is mirrored by Fayt, a pleased grin coming to his face.]

Wow, who would have thought they'd give this thing back functional?

[Being a realist, Cliff had is doubts about it being fully functional...but, this? It was one helluva start.]

We'll need to do a few more tests to see if it acts up or something, but you gotta do what you gotta. Man, I seriously never thought I'd see that thing again.

[Fully functional was another story entirely, but even some degree of function was more than what Fayt would have expected from their captors. He slips the ring off, bouncing it in the palm of his hand.]

Same here. It's not like them to just hand stuff like this over so easily.

[Bribery. It had to be one of the reasons, or there was someone in the department who had a particular shine for them and wanted to show it in a harmless, if disconcerting, way.]

It's not, but it's here. And, you know what they say about gift horses. Let's just be happy that we've got it and not ask too many questions. My head hurts just thinking about it all.

[Fayt suspected something of the same. Glancing at the ring once more, he slips it in his pocket for safekeeping. No point in wearing it when he wasn't going to use it more right now.]

Same here. Let's just call it luck and be glad for it, yeah? [If it really was bribery, they must think they were pretty simple minded.]

[He laughed softly.]

Hah. Yeah, let's.

[They couldn't control the things that happened by luck, so there was no point in worrying over it.

A few more steps in the cold night brought them to the plaza, and that much closer to their destination.]

...Man. They better have something good and hot on the menu tonight.

Man, a hot meal would be nice. [And he was getting really hungry. He'd planned a late dinner to begin with, but this? This was a heck of a lot better. He shoves both his hands into his pockets again in an effort to keep them warm.]

I was just going to have a sandwich before, but this is definitely the better plan.

No work and no cleanup.

[It was a good excuse to just relax and talk, possibly touch base over a few drinks... Just like old times, in a way.]

But, I've gotta say, it's a shame that you-know-who's still bothered by all that. Would'a been a nice change to have him around for once.

[Yeah, it would have been, but....

He really needed to talk to Albel. This whole avoidance game had gone on way too long for Fayt's tastes, and if he was being honest, it was worrying. It was his first real 'uncomfortable' shift, and the reaction certainly didn't bode well for the future.] He'll get over it eventually. If not, I'll see about talking to him.

But hey, he snoozes he loses, right? Maybe we can all go together another time.

[Albel would have to adapt or they would all be miserable-- that was the bottom line, in Cliff's eyes, but he knew that there was no rushing Albel the Wicked of the Black Brigade.]

Yeah, maybe. For all we know, he's gonna find out 'bout this and throw a fit at us-- and that'll show him for moping for too long.

[He cracked a grin, clearly enjoying his own joke.]

[Fayt lets out a short laugh, returning that grin with one of his own.] And then he'll sulk more because we didn't take him?

Yep, because that guy doesn't even need a reason for it.

[Cliff wasn't complaining about it either-- a part of him was grateful that Luceti hadn't changed any of them too drastically yet. Then again, there was always reason to be grateful for ~~relatively~~ peaceful times.]

That's true enough. [That grin grows. Even if they were stuck here for another year, Fayt had already decided that he wasn't going to let this place tear him up much. They'd find a way out eventually... but for now? They'd manage. It was really kind of pleasant here, shifts aside.]

[Cliff could handle mostly pleasant. It had it's merits, and he planned to enjoy those for as long as they could.]

Welp, [he said, slowing down as they came upon Good Spirits.] we're here. You ready to go break a few laws?

[That gets yet another snort of laughter from Fayt.] Think it's a little too late for that. Breaking a few more won't hurt at this point.

[He's pretty sure they've broken at least two dozen federation laws, Drinking underage is hardly a drop in the bucket.]

[Interfering with the affairs of an underdeveloped planet and forcing First Contact was enough to get them a massive sentence, if the Federation was still functioning by the time everything in 4D space resolved. Not that Cliff cared, given the situation that had caused it.]
